Is Google Fair?
If you are the owner of a new website, trying to get a decent ranking from the mighty google, you will no doubt answer with a resounding, NO! Recent findings indicate that Google’s algorithm has an ageing filter, which put in simple terms, makes it harder for a new webmaster to get high ranking in the SERP’s, in the short term at least. So does this mean google favours established sites over new ones?
Broad keywords appear nigh on impossible to get top 50 rankings for, and Google’s first page seems like an unattainable dream. Even for obscure and untargeted keywords, its like you are banging your head against the proverbial brick wall, being ranked 26th out of 45. Ring any bells?
But before you give Google a verbal bashing, stop and think to yourself, why is Google there? What is its business all about? Who does Google strive to please? If you think it is webmasters, think again! The search engine business is all about the searcher. The engine’s whole way of thinking is geared to what searchers want and trying to give it to them, something that Google has been very successful at doing. Chances are, you use Google yourself when searching the net?
Follow it logically and the ageing delay is a good thing for the searcher, which makes it a good thing for the engine. Searchers are usually looking for either up to date information, or a reliable supplier for the product or service they are interested in spending their hard earned money on.
Weather webmasters like it or not, most people trust a company that has been trading for a long period of time, over a company that has just set up in business. It may be true that just because you have been trading for 5 years, does not make you any less likely to go out of business, but most peoples perception follows that way of thinking.
Over the years, webmasters and the seo community have tried to “cheat” the engine’s ranking systems. As each technique was tried and tested, and used for the benefit of the select few who could afford the fees, the engines moved the goalposts. Long gone are the days when you could place a few keywords in your meta-tags and know you’ll be on the first page for those keywords, which is a good thing. If you have been using search engines for a few years, you will remember the days when no matter what you searched for, some porn site would be presented as a “relevant” search result.
So what can the owners of a new site do? Simply put, nothing! Google says “act as if we are not here.” So continue to optimise your site, fill it with quality content, make sure you have a good internal and external linking structure in place, get the keyword density right etc. Chances are, while you wait for Google to decide you have been around long enough to go in the mix with the rest, you will enjoy high rankings on the other major engines. Get things right and once you emerge from “Googles ageing delay pit of obscurity” you should be well placed to rank highly on Google too. Unless they move the goalposts again that is.

The Importance of Page Content
The Importance of Page Content
The content of a page is probably the most important consideration when building traffic to your web site. Other techniques do gain more traffic but page content and content of your web site in general is most important when producing a good quality site that will naturally build traffic.
1.1 General guidelines for a page
For a page to rank well with the search engines, the page should be optimized and have sufficient text that is of relevance to your visitor. Ideally the page will be written and presented to be easy to read. It will have a good use of white space and placing of text blocks and pictures (graphics).
The text you write should be warm and compelling. It should flow well so it is easy to read and be in short paragraphs so interest is easy to maintain.
The content you place on the page should be reflected by the page name, title, the H1 heading, description and meta tag keywords.
1.2 Page Content
As the number of pages on the web increases, it is becoming more difficult to achieve a high page ranking. There is much you can do and the most important consideration is the content on the page. Search engines are becoming more specialized at looking at the page as a whole and ranking the page on the basis if its content rather than just the title, meta tag keywords and the description. The text or copy on the page is now becoming the most important feature with the all the properties of the page being used to judge its ranking.
This is good from our point of view. Let me explain. If we are interested in creating a page that is relevant to our site visitor then the copy of the page will contain accurate and compelling information about its topic. The page will naturally rank higher than other less well constructed pages. If our pages are the best we can make them, when compared with much poorer pages, our pages will rapidly rise in ranking.
When a search engines refers a visitor to your page, they will record the time that they spend at your site (as long as the visitor clicks back to the search engine). This information is used to rank pages. If your visitor stays longer on your site compared with other sites, your page ranking will naturally improve.
So creating pages that are “sticky” will help ranking and in turn increase traffic to your site.

Writing Search Engine Friendly Webpages
In order to tap the huge stream of targeted traffic an internet search engine can provide a website you need to master a few common sense principles when crafting your webpages.
You can rest assured no sites receive top search engine rankings by chance in competitive keyword markets. They spend time and money to acquire and maintain their search engine positioning. Targeting your keyword market precisely and applying the principles in this article will help you compete in any keyword marketplace.
When crafting your web pages for the search engines remember that a search engine spider is not human. They only read the html code for your website, they do not actually “see” what your site looks like.
1. Use static html pages not dynamically generated web pages wherever you can. Some dynamically created WebPages are not indexable by the search engines. If they can’t index your pages you might as well not exist no matter how useful your website might be.
2. Use your main keywords in meta ” title ” tag, meta ” description ” tag, and meta ” keywords ” tags. This tells the search engines what you feel the webpage is about.
3. Use your keywords in the first line of your web page ” body ” and within ” header ” tags throughout your html document. Use ” bolding” of keywords where appropriate. Using your keywords within bold and header tags makes them stand out as important. Also having them near the beginning of your web page is also an indicator of importance in the search engine’s eyes.
4. Use your keywords in img ” alt ” and link ” title ” tags. These tags don’t show up as visible text but they can help give a search engine a better idea of what your link is about. Resist the urge to stuff a lot of keywords into these tags but definitely use them to your advantage and place a select few of your most important keywords in there.
5. Don’t use a lot of tables in your html. Use css style sheets to store webpage “style” definitions if you can. Storing style information in Css reduces the overall size of your WebPages considerably allowing them to load much faster.
6. Don’t use a lot of outbound or affiliate links within your webpage. Keep your web pages focused on providing content first, not making money. . Search Engine’s don’t like WebPages that are just filled with affiliate links and banners. These pages have little or no content and do not score well because of this.
7. Maintain a high “visible text: graphics” ratio on your webpage. This is a similar idea to 6 plus your pages will load faster with less graphics on them.
8. Repeat your major keyword phrases near the end of your webpage in a sentence with the keywords bolded. Optionally place a short sentence in a header tag.
After you have created your webpage and applied these principles upload the page to your web host and visit the following URL to analyze your work:

Optimize Your Website or Get Lost In The Crowd!
It used to be that designing an attractive website to promote your company and products was fairly straightforward. After you designed your site and built a few keywords into the code, you would simply submit the site to the search engines or a directory, grab an iced tea and wait for the traffic.
That model worked fairly well in 1996 but if you are still following this strategy in 2005, you are effectively non-existent on the internet. Why? There are now dozens of search engines and directories and somewhere in the area of 80 million websites on the www. Still think folks are finding you?
So how does the average consumer find your company? They type in a couple of keywords into a search engine and are then presented with thousands of your competitors’ websites.
Let’s say your company is Walt’s Widgets. You have a pretty website with pictures of your widgets, a nice “about us” page, maybe some employee pictures and a picture of your beautiful building. It all looks good on the website but when Mr. Consumer types “widgets” into Google, poor old Walt’s Widgets is on page 620 of the search results!
How can this be? Your site is not optimized for the search engines and is not being indexed by the search engine spiders and robots so you aren’t being seen!
Research has shown that the average surfer will only review the first three pages of search results and will not drill down any deeper. If you are on page 62 of the search results, you effectively don’t exist!
Surfers and search engines view a website completely differently and for you to appear on the first three pages of search results is critical to your continued profitability. You must know what the search engines are looking for, what relevance they are placing on your keywords, what elements of your site have a “welcome sign” for the spiders and, most importantly, know what keywords the surfer is using in his search. Just because you sell widgets it doesn’t mean that “widgets” is the term being used the most by surfers when looking for your product.
SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is the process of analyzing keywords, reviewing search trends, analyzing link popularity, building code tags, analyzing your competition, optimizing pages within your website to be search engine friendly, editing web pages, submissions to directories and search engines, and reciprocal link building…just to name a few.
What you are after with SEO is not getting the highest number of website visitors. What you are actually seeking are qualified site visitors who have an interest in buying what you’re selling. Professional SEO can help deliver a targeted audience to your business. After all, what would you rather have? 500 site visitors with a 1% conversion rate or 100 site visitors with a 10% conversion rate?
Professional SEO is critical to your company’s web presence so if your site was designed by your summer intern in 2002 or your bookkeeper’s son as part of his high school “media class”, I assure you that you have some work to do.
Start with a good website design featuring good content and navigation. Then, utilize an SEO professional who can wring the most out of your website and deliver dollars to your doorstep.
