To Get More Clients from Networking, Pretend It’s Your Party!
Serious and consistent networking is one of the best ways to jumpstart your client base very quickly and to continually bring new prospects and referrals into your pipeline. But, admit it, it’s sometimes very intimidating (if not downright frightening) to network alone, even for an extrovert like me.
There are a few different types of professional networking events, one of them being the “free-for-all.” That’s the kind of networking where you’re basically thrust into a roomful of people who seemingly know each other and are supposed to introduce yourself. Ouch! That’s not always easy, even if you feel like a born networker.
A tactic I use when I’m feeling really overwhelmed by a roomful of people I don’t know is that I pretend it’s my own party. That’s right, as if I’m the one who organized the shin-dig in the first place.
If you know me personally, you already know that I’m a pretty social person and I LOVE to entertain. That being said, I’ve thrown hundreds of parties since my early twenties and I’ve had many occasions to feel what it feels like to be a host.
A host:
- is in control of the situation
- is confident
- knows most everybody
- has the right to ask if they don’t know you
In throwing cocktail parties and barbecues over the years, I’ve experienced more than a few times someone in my kitchen or living room that I didn’t know, usually a guest of one of my guests. I usually feel really comfortable going up to that person and saying, “Hi, I’m Fabienne. We haven’t met yet. What’s your name? Who did you come with tonight?” with a smile. I used to call this my ‘Ultimate Icebreaker,’ especially when I was single. 
Taking that as a cue, when I get slightly shy in a large overwhelming networking situation, I shift my way of thinking about the event and pretend it’s my OWN party. Then I do the same thing, using my ‘Ultimate Icebreaker.’ It always works and I’m never nervous once I get started!
The best part of it is, sometimes, the person I walked up to and started the conversation with often DOES feel like it’s my party, or at least that I’m really confident. I guess that’s not a bad thing for attracting clients.

Defining VoIP
When I opened Todd Cardin Answering Service twenty years ago there were not a lot of options in phone service. Today there are so many options and choices in telephony that it is mind boggling. It is confusing living with so many choices. Even those of us in the telecommunications industry find it impossible to keep up with everything. This is especially true for voice over IP.
Many people hear the term Voice over IP or broadband telephone service and still are not sure what that means. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Using VoIP, voice information is converted into digital packets and sent over the Internet, and then converted back into analog signals before reaching the phone receiver at the other end. This is a growing and new technology which will surely expand as the number of broadband connections increase.
There are two types of VoIP service. The first is called hardware based VoIP. People using this type of VoIP phone services, have their phone fitted with an adapter that will connect to a high-speed Internet connection. When a call is made, it goes through your local telephone company to the VoIP provider, and then over the Internet to the other parties telephone .The second type is software based VoIP phone services, where you use a microphone headset plugged into your computer and make calls, which are routed through your cable modem, by using the keyboard. VoIP can also be run over a private data network.
The big advantage of VoIP is that voice information sent over the Internet avoids using the fixed circuitry of traditional telephony networks - avoiding the tolls charged by traditional telephone service.
The big disadvantage of VoIP is quality of service. While in theory because packets are sent over the best route at the time rather than through fixed routes, VoIP services would be reliable and consistent, in reality problems such as packet loss, bandwidth and plain old Internet outages make VoIP quality and reliability inconsistent.
VoIP is the future of telephony and the quality and reliability will improve and the industry will explode even further.

The Cyprus reunification talks, which are now underway, are fused with the interest and support of the wider international community, but especially that of the UN, Turkey and Greece, whose input to the negotiations taking place between Demetris Christofias, of the Republic of Cyprus, and his Turkish counterpart, Mehmet Ali Talat is crucial.
The fact that Cyprus is now a member of the EU also plays a huge bearing on the reunification talks, because discussions regarding Turkey’s entry into the EU are due to officially restart next year. With Cyprus now having the right to veto Turkey’s membership, the Greek Cypriots have made no secret of their desire to see Ankara contributing to the reunification attempts - through their relationship to Talat - in a proactive and positive way.
The EU itself cannot mediate the talks because now that Cyprus is a member there would be an obvious issue with neutrality, not least because so many of the EU leaders greeted Christofias with enthusiasm and friendship following his successful election this February.
In the future the UN’s role may be fairly broad - from organising a PR exercise that does for civil society what Greek Cypriot state media entirely failed to do during the crucial referendum stage of the Annan plan, to running opinion polls in an attempt to foster social unison.
Addressing the UN General Assembly for the first time, Christofias described the UN as ‘an essential institution for our global survival and for the further development of humanity in a balanced and fair way in increasingly difficult conditions.’
Christofias added that the UN represented the ‘will of the international community for Cyprus to survive’ and this week Obama described his vision of this surviving little island in the east of the Mediterranean.
Obama, and his running mate Joe Biden, issued a statement this week regarding the future of the long divided island. The democrat ticket suggested that they would support a reunification plan that led to an island where ‘two communities… [are] able to exercise substantial political authority in … [their] own geographical zone.’
The presidential hopeful went on to qualify his hopes by adding that ‘a just and mutually agreed settlement’ would be dependent on resolving those ‘difficult issues like property refugees, land and security’, which is exactly what Talat and Christofias are attempting to do during their weekly meetings which are now going on.

Sure we can call these people mentors, angels, coaches or counselors… but nothing happens nor will anything happen significantly until we make up our minds to support others. Networking, effective networking is about people helping people help people not because of what they do but because of who they are… we are all people!
As you network effectively remember, the concept of banking, “One must make deposits before making a withdrawal!” Of course, the more deposits you make into the lives of others, the more withdrawals can be made by you when you need the help of others, and you will need the help of others if not now, you will need the help of others in the near future! The only way to make sure of having sufficient resources is to give, give, and give some more!
